Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
