Minister Confirms Ministry of Defence Looking at Security Risk from Vehicles from China, as Personnel Instructed to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

An defense minister has revealed that the MoD is currently investigating the potential security risks posed by Chinese cars, while personnel have been instructed to avoid talking about secret matters in any cars.

Safety Advice for MoD Personnel

During a recently aired interview on LBC, a defence minister addressed reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to talk about secret material while riding in Chinese vehicles.

The minister said that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, however emphasised that safety is a concern in all contemporary cars.

Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing risks of surveillance that exist in all automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.

When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using all cars from China, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”

Wider Security Context

The announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable public transport and bring chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.

This broader defence situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and caution in all areas of official activities, from vehicle use to communication practices.
